This article explains what Pivot Report is, why you should use it with Jira, and how to get started.
What is Pivot Report?
Pivot Report is a reporting marketplace app for Atlassian’s Jira that helps you sum up, roll up, and break down your work item data—no spreadsheets required.
At its core, Pivot Report gives you a pivot-table-like experience inside Jira, without the need for Excel, allowing you to group work items by fields like assignee, priority, project, or any custom field, and then apply calculations such as count, time spent, story points, or Service Level Agreement (SLA) metrics.
Why should you use the app with Jira?
Pivot Report helps answer key questions that team leads and project managers face. It goes beyond tables by highlighting warnings and capacity gaps. These insights help you decide when to adjust scope or commitment dates to keep your project on track.
Core questions ever lead faces
Jira is flexible platform that helps teams around the world track and manage their development tasks. It’s truly powerful — with custom workflows, fields, work item types, and projects. You might start small, but once everything is set up, people in your company will quickly begin adding more and more work items to Jira. And it’s worth it. It really is.
Once most of your development data is stored in Jira, it’s the perfect time to start analyzing it. You’ll probably want to know things like:
-
What’s the big picture of what we’re doing?
-
Where are we now, and who did what?
-
Who’s involved in the process, and how much is left to do?
-
Are there any flaws in our plans?
Looking for answers
To answer the questions above, you explore Jira’s default reports. All the familiar terms are there, such as Sprint, Velocity, Burndown. Although, somehow, it’s still not enough. It just doesn’t cover everything you need for your use case.
So, you dig deeper. First, you learn advanced searching within the Issue Navigator. Then you build five, ten, maybe fifteen dashboards. Good progress — but still not quite enough. Why? Because you’re dealing with tables — countless tables full of columns, but with no clear overview of progress or totals.
Next, you start exploring the Marketplace for additional reporting options. And that’s when you realize that most reporting apps need extra setup. In many cases, they don’t align with your existing Jira configuration or project customizations. As a result, you can’t simply start using them without some adjustments. It’s not always the case, but it’s common enough to slow you down.
